50 People Who Made The WATC - Tim Hooley

Tim Hooley was the Chairman of the Western Australian Turf Club for more than 10 years across two terms in the late 19th century before he travelled to Europe seeking medical advice about a condition then known as creeping paralysis that would end his life in Switzerland in 1903.

Born at sea aboard the Bolivar as it sailed from the United Kingdom to Tasmania in 1842, Edward Timothy Hooley was better known as either ET or Tim Hooley. Hooley arrived in Western Australia in 1864 and, in addition to contributing his expertise to the WATC - for example, he played a key supporting role in the creation of the Perth Cup - he pioneered an overland stock route from Geraldton to the Ashburton River and served a member of the Legislative Council first and the Legislative Assembly subsequently.
