50 People Who Made The WATC - Marjorie Charleson

Marjorie Charleson is best known for being the Western Australian Turf Club official who attracted Kingston Town to run in the Ascot Racecourse race that today bears the three-time WS Cox Plate winner's name but it is just one of the trailblazing First Lady of WA Racing's many achievements.

The first public relations officer attached to any Australian thoroughbred racing club and a woman working in what was then very much a man's world, Charleson lured the best horses, jockeys and trainers to WATC events, she brought Fashions on the Field from Melbourne to Perth and there was no stronger advocate for female participation in the sport.

In 2016, Perth Racing named the Marjorie Charleson Classic in her honour. This season's edition will take place at Ascot Racecourse on Good Friday.
