Female jockey turns roving mounted reporter for Perth Racing

At just 19, young West Australian talent, Lucy Warwick is carving up the field. In just two and a half years, Lucy has moved from Apprentice Jockey, to racing group winners, and now takes on a role as Perth Racing’s new roving mounted reporter at the James Boag’s Premium-Railway Stakes.

This year Perth Racing cemented its commitment to bringing high quality Group 1 racing to Perth over three weekends at the TabTouch Masters, while also ensuring new and different experiences for those at Ascot or watching the coverage from home.

CEO Julian Sullivan said, “We’re thrilled that Lucy can be our roving mounted reporter on Course for the TabTouch Masters.”

“There’s nothing quite like the excitement of watching thoroughbred racing live and seeing the speed and skill of jockey and horse in action. With Lucy as our mounted reporter, we’re able get a true insider’s view on how the race was run from the jockey’s point of view, just moments after the race has run.”

As the roving mounted reporter, Lucy is on track minutes after the race is run and on hand to speak to jockeys. This footage is beamed across the Course and through television programming, giving those on course, and at home, another experience of thoroughbred racing.

From a racing family, Lucy chalked up her 200th career winner in just 20 months of riding with a double win at Ascot in 2015 and first group win on Hazzabeel in the R.J. Peters Stakes. Over just two years, Lucy notched up three group winners and 262 wins.

Daughter of trainer Justin Warwick, Lucy has enjoyed a career start that most could only dream about.

“Being a jockey wasn't something that I had ever really thought about, but I've always been passionate about horses and riding so I decided to give it a shot as a career,” Warwick said.

From there the opportunities have really opened up. Perth Racing have given me an opportunity to capture the excitement of the race speaking with some of Australia’s best jockeys immediately after their race,” said Warwick.

“It’s a great opportunity to develop a different set of skills, particularly in the media,”

Another local favourite is Perth mare, Perfect Reflection, firming as the James Boag’s Premium-Railway Stakes favourite after Tuesday’s barrier draw. Ascot Racecourse will make racing history this year when it becomes the first track in the world to stage a Group One race worth at least $1,000,000 on three consecutive Saturdays.

“The field is very competitive in this year’s James Boag’s Premium-Railway Stakes said Lucy. I am looking forward to chatting with each of the race winners and capturing the emotions and insights of getting to the line.”
