WA's richest horse race to launch in Autumn 2023

Perth Racing and Racing and Wagering WA are delighted to announce that WA’s richest horse race will be coming to Ascot Racecourse in 2023.

Part of the new slot race series The Western Trilogy, this $4 million thoroughbred race will run during the Autumn Ascot Racing Carnival in a massive weekend of racing across Perth that will also feature harness and greyhound slot races.

With a distinct WA theme, the racing series will be the first tri-code slot racing event in Australia, featuring the first thoroughbred slot race to run in Perth.

Each event takes its name from an icon of Western Australia, with the thoroughbred race affectionately named after WA’s island-dwelling marsupial the Quokka.

The slot race format features 14 starters sprinting over 1200m. Horses are nominated by slot owners who pay $200,000 to secure a slot (starting position) in the race. The slot owner has the option to nominate their own horse for the race, or to do a deal with the owner of another horse to share the prize money.

James Oldring, Perth Racing CEO says, "The Quokka is a fantastic opportunity for racing in WA, and a chance for us to showcase world-class racing at Ascot during the Autumn. We're expecting significant interest from potential slot holders in the coming weeks - which is all part of the unique drama a race like this creates".
