50 People Who Made The WATC - August Lee Steere

Augustus Lee Steere was the third Chairman of the Western Australian Turf Club who owes his place in the 50 People Who Made The WATC list to not only his own service across many roles within the organisation but also his establishment of the Lee Steere family's love of thoroughbred racing.

Born in the United Kingdom in 1835, Lee Steere arrived in Western Australia aboard the Avalanche in 1855 and married Ellen Roe in 1859. Lee Steere and his wife had seven children, the fourth of which was Ernest Augustus Lee Steere, who served 21 years as the WATC's Chair and fathered Ernest Henry Lee-Steere, who did likewise. Lee Steere was a WATC steward before being its Chair from 1868 to 1870, he quit farming after an accident in 1871 and he died in 1903. The Lee Steere racing dynasty began with Augustus Lee Steere and that is his greatest legacy.
