Under the Radar: New Kids On The Block-Belmont Oaks Day - Saturday 8 July

Race 1 - 12:38pm 2017 Freshman Sires Plate (1400 Metres) – Full Field

6. AL CAPITANO

TABtouch opening price: $12

A pretty smart customer is Al Capitano.

There was a lot to like about the son of Al Maher’s debut performance when he box-seated behind the speed before running on strongly into second along the cutaway.

He was run down by a handy performer in Pearl Trade on that occasion.

Steven Parnham will ride the gelding from barrier nine and, if the gelding steps away as cleanly as he did on debut and in his most recent trial, he can take up a prominent position on the speed and be hard to catch.

7. THUNDERCLAP NEWMAN

TABtouch opening price: $51

Thunderclap Newman does not possess the best record over 1200m or when first up, having never placed over the sprint journey or when fresh, but he is an out-and-out wet tracker.

His trial leading into the race was good when beaten only 1.75 lengths in a fast run trial behind More Aces, which clocked 60.47 over 1000m at Belmont on June 12.

The son of Song Of Tara may find the 1200m too short but, with wet conditions expected, he can run into a place.

6. VERDELLO BLUE

TABtouch opening price: $26

Over 2100m at Belmont: 11 starts for three wins and five placings.

On rain-affected tracks: 13 starts for two wins and five placings.

Those statistics read well for rising 11-year-old Verdello Blue.

In a race where Fathoms Of Gold will lead, Verdello Blue can sit off him and be one of the runners to catch in the home straight.

His run for third last start was excellent behind Not Again Ken and that run showed that there is still plenty of life left in the old boy.

Don’t be surprised to see the son of Knowledge hold on to a top three finish.
