Mitchell Pateman Winning the Belmont Sprint on The Velvet King Saturday 29 May 2021 at Belmont Park Racecourse

Pateman eyes off metro winner

Dual licence holder Mitchell Pateman will be hoping he can train while riding his first-metro winner when Nights Mystery takes his place in Race 1 Glenroy Chaff Plate (1000m) at Belmont Park on Wednesday.

Pateman trained his first ever winner at the end of last month when Speeding Comet was able to win at Kalgoorlie with him in the saddle.

Nights Mystery caught the eye on June 14 with an impressive trial over the 400m, winning by 2.8 lengths and appearing to have plenty left in the tank.

The two-year-old gelding by Knights Exemplar will jump from barrier one in the first heat of two two-year-old events to take place.

While Pateman is just starting out as a trainer, it has been another successful season in the saddle for him.

He currently sits in sixth on the WA Jockey Premiership with 73 winners for the season and he is in fifth position on the WA Metro Jockey Premiership with 34 winners.
