50 People Who Made The WATC - Dudley Braham

Dudley Braham was a senior Western Australian Turf Club official for 35 years, starting his service as a handicapper, then leading both the stewards and the handicappers simultaneously before stewarding until his death.

Born in Victoria in 1878, Braham was in the employ of the Western Australian Trotting Association before he swapped codes to join the thoroughbred racing industry in 1916. About 10 years into Braham's WATC career he doubled his workload to combine handicapping and stewarding and he was promoted to head both departments in 1941. The WATC went down a different path in 1949 and Braham ceased handicapping, concentrating on stewarding prior to a short illness claiming his life in 1951. Braham was respected interstate and overseas and jurisdictions outside Western Australian adopted many of his thoroughbred racing suggestions.
