Under the Radar: Ascot - Wednesday 3 May

Race 1 - 12:28PM GET THE TABTOUCH MAIDEN (1200 METRES) - FULL FIELD

3. DOWN ‘N’ DIRTY

TABtouch opening price: $31

Down ‘N’ Dirty comes out of the trial which Epic Grey won but, despite being beaten 2½ lengths in the form guide, his run was just as good as the winner’s considering he was three and four-wide without cover for the entire heat.

He may not be up to the likes of Monsoon and Massagi, which feature prominently in betting, but his trial was just as good as Epic Grey’s and Epic Grey has opened up as $3.30 favourite with TABtouch.

Down ‘N’ Dirty wanted to lay in down the straight at Lark Hill but Shaun Meeres barely touched the son of Gingerbread Man while Chris Parnham was riding hard on Epic Grey out in front.

$31 is completely the wrong price.

3. IMPRESSIVE STAR

TABtouch opening price: $17

Impressive Star looks set for return after running midfield on debut behind Macavity at York in November 2016.

He was beaten by eight lengths but was quite raw and obviously didn’t have any racing craft behind him.

The son of Myboycharlie would have taken plenty of learnings from that experience and it is likely that Cliff Green wanted to give him time to mature.

Another key factor for the bay is the blinkers going on for the first time.

The four-year-old’s damsire is the great Zabeel and, as a rule, the sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters of Zabeel improve lengths when blinkers are added as they help the stock to focus on the task at hand as they can be wayward and are not all there in the head.

8. FREECELL

TABtouch opening price: $8

Freecell is another which will appreciate blinkers going on for the first time as he has been running on nicely in recent starts but failing to feature in the finish due to him settling too far back in his races.

With the aid of barrier four and the important gear change, the son of Demerit should be able to settle in the first half of the field which will give him a better opportunity to settle closer to the speed and not face the tough task of running on from the tail of the field.

His runs haven’t been bad at all but the blinkers on will give him that killer instinct required to win races.

He pops up as a sound each-way chance in betting.

Watch his good effort for seventh two starts ago when only beaten by 1½ lengths by Black Scandal (maroon silks with black cap):
