50 People Who Made The WATC - 2. Ernest Henry Lee-Steere

Ernest Henry Lee-Steere was Chairman of the Western Australian Turf Club from 1963 to 1984, working in tandem with Harry Bolton to deliver what was a truly golden age for metropolitan thoroughbred racing in this state.

Born in Perth in 1912, Lee-Steere worked on his family's stations, served in the forces and played polo for Western Australia. Lee-Steere's interest in the turf followed that of his father, fellow long-serving WATC Chairman, Ernest Augustus Lee Steere, and he sat on the organisation's Commitee for 15 years before succeeding Edgar Meares in the top job. Lee Steere was Lord Mayor of Perth for seven years of his tenure as WATC Chairman and such was his contribution to public life he was knighted in 1977. Lee Steere died aged 98 in 2011, four years after being among the first intake of WA Racing Hall of Fame inductees.
