50 People Who Made The WATC - 3. Harry Bolton

Harry Bolton was Secretary of the Western Australian Turf Club from 1958 until his death in 1978, a visionary administrator whose entrepreneurial mind, business acumen and personable touch enabled his vision for not only the organisation but also thoroughbred racing in general to become reality.

Born in South Australia in 1914, Bolton is synonymous with WA because, with the support of many WATC Committees, he lifted the sport in this state to new heights. Bolton's most commonly cited achievements pertain to Belmont Park - the construction of the Grandstand and redevelopment of the track - but he commissioned on-course closed-circuit television, introduced movable running rails, attracted famous participants to the club's major races and so much more. Bolton died aged 64 while leading a WATC racing tour in the United Kingdom.
