50 People Who Made The WATC - 4. Ernest Augustus Lee Steere

Ernest Augustus Lee Steere was Chairman of the Western Australian Turf Club from 1920 to 1940 and he owned Eurythmic, which won 31 of his 47 starts, including the 1919 Perth Cup, the 1920 Caulfield Cup and the 1921 Sydney Cup, making him one of Western Australia's greatest gallopers.

Born in Beverley in 1866, Lee Steere was the second son of another WATC Chairman, Augustus Lee Steere, and he joined the club's Committee in 1912. Under his leadership the WATC made big changes and implemented innovative initiatives, including rejuvenating racing through a renewed emphasis on two-year-old events - the highlight of which was the reestablished Breeders Plate for locally bred juveniles - improving Ascot Racecourse's facilities and consulting other industry participants more frequently than his predecessors did. Lee Steere died in 1957 aged 91.
