50 People Who Made The WATC - Ray Crawford

Ray Crawford served on the Committee of the Western Australian Turf Club for more than a decade, including four years as its Vice Chairman in the 1960s, but it was his contribution to WA's Totalisator Agency Board, of which he was a founding member, that makes him stand out.

Crawford died in 1980 but his memory lives on through the RS Crawford Stakes, a Listed race over 1,000 metres currently conducted early in the Ascot Racing Carnival. Five Group One winners feature on the RS Crawford Stakes honour roll - Medicine Kid (1990 Railway Stakes), Barrosa Boy (1992 Castlemaine 10,000), Summer Beau (1996 and 1997 Fruit 'N' Veg Stakes), Magnifisio (2014 Winterbottom Stakes) and Sheidel (2017 Oakleigh Plate) - so many star gallopers have been victorious in the sprint.
