Essential Spice was nothing short of brilliant at Belmont Park two weeks ago

Punting Form race reports: Saturday 17 August

Punting Form's exclusive ratings say Essential Spice has been one of the stars of this year's Western Australian winter so its data points to the treble-seeking Daniel and Ben Pearce-trained mare being the galloper to beat in Saturday's Brendan Kane 60th Birthday Handicap.

There were grounds for thinking Essential Spice's winter campaign had peaked when she was runner-up to Samizdat in back-to-back Belmont Park races but she was an impressive winner two starts ago and she was nothing short of brilliant in blowing away Pym's Royale and seven others on the first Saturday of the 2019-2020 WA thoroughbred racing season. Of course, there is a risk Essential Spice will not back up her wonderful win with an equally terrific performance but the Pearce brothers have worked out 1,000 metres is her best trip and she has posted excellent ratings with more than 57 kilograms in the past, most recently behind Baron Bostock.
