Under the Radar: Ascot - Saturday 11 March

Race 1 - 1:19PM MPA SKILLS PLATE (1000 METRES) – FULL FIELD

4. COGNAC

TABtouch opening price: $11

A son of Henny Hughes, Cognac is having his first career start for trainer Paul Jordan and the Lima Syndicate.

He has trialled three times, the most recent was behind the very speedy Wacked Out on Monday 27 February at Belmont where he ran second in 59.95.

The colt looked to be flat out and well ridden on that occasion but he should be race fit and go to the front on a day that may suit those close to the speed.

Trainer Paul Jordan usually has his juveniles ready to run so watch out for a bold effort.

His dam, Scottish Storm, won the 2004 Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic (1100m) on debut so the precocity should run in the family.

The good each-way price is mainly due to him being a first starter but he is definitely worth a bet.

12. CAPTAIN BONEHEAD

TABtouch opening price: $20

Aaron Bazeley trains the son of So Secret which looks to be able to run a mischievous race from the inside draw.

The in-form Brad Parnham jumps back on after riding the gelding seven starts ago and he is hoping to improve on his recent form where he has placed in four of his last five starts.

The five-year-old lacks class compared to his rivals and doesn’t win out of turn, as his record suggests (35 starts, two wins and 11 placings), but he can get a nice smother behind likely leader Veuve De Vega and get through to run a cheeky race.

Race 8 - 5:40PM GALVINS PLUMBING SUPPLIES HANDICAP (1800 METRES) – FULL FIELD

1. SHALO

TABtouch opening price: $19

The six-year-old carries the top weight tag but gets some relief with in-form apprentice Aaron Mitchell claiming 1.5kg, which means the gelding will carry 58.5kg.

His last and only time over 1800m was at Ascot, in February 2015, which was also in 66+ grade and he came out an impressive winner when box-seating behind the leader.

That was the last time the son of Danehill Express graced the winners’ enclosure.

Trained by Simon Miller, he will lead or sit outside the leader, from the wide draw, and should be fit enough fourth up to give a strong kick on the turn.

He is worth having something on, especially for the place.
