Smith relies on brothers in PeopleStart-Kingston Town Classic

Trainer Lindsey Smith will have two runners on Saturday in the Group 1 PeopleStart-Kingston Town Classic, Trap For Fools and Too Close The Sun.

Trap For Fools is a seven-year-old gelding by Poet’s Voice, out of the mare Old Money, while Too Close The Sun is five-year-old gelding by Carlton House, also out of Old Money, making the pair half-brothers.

The half-brothers have both already shown their credentials at Group 1 level with Trap For Fools winning the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington back in 2018 and Too Close The Sun finishing second in the lead up event to the Kingston Town, the Group 1 Kirin-Railway Stakes.

Both are clearly at different stages of their careers, but deserve respect going into the $1-million event at Ascot Racecourse.

While Trap For Fools hasn’t won since that Group 1 victory at Flemington, he has placed at Group 1 level since that performance in the Australia Cup and has shown glimpses of his old form when finishing fifth in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield back in September, beaten less than four-lengths by Russian Camelot.

Too Close The Sun has risen in grade rapidly since winning his maiden in late August 2019, since that victory he has had 13 starts, winning seven of them and placing in a further 5 races, including the Group 3 Hosemasters-Asian Beau Stakes and the Group 1 Kirin-Railway Stakes.

Both have similar racing tactics and like to push forward, from barrier 17 (Trap For Fools) and barrier 10 (Too Close The Sun) their hands have been forced and it is likely the brothers will be extremely close to each other as they turn for home.
