Punting Form race reports: Saturday 13 July

Gatting is short odds with TABtouch to win the Swan River Vase for the second year in a row but Saturday's Belmont Park main event throws up an interesting tote betting proposition given the likelihood of it being run at a quick tempo.

It is impossible to oppose Gatting, which posted a Punting Form figure of -5.6 lengths in winning last season's Swan River Vase. Gatting has won five black type races, including two at Group Two level, and it took a brilliant Galaxy Star run to deny him in this term's Kirin-Railway Stakes. Gatting's two-year Punting Form personal best of -12.6l is at least 4.9l superior to those of his Swan River Vase rivals and he is a proven commodity off all sorts of tempos. Mr Alby, however, is the intriguing Swan River Vase competitor because he is backing up seven days after what was, according to Punting Form, his best-ever performance, he likes Belmont Park and, if Troy Turner allows him to roll along in front at a fast pace, he could unsettle TABtouch's second favourite, Come Play With Me, which has finished first, second, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth in the six races he has contested that have had the leader go quicker than Punting Form's benchmark to the 600 metres pole. Come Play With Me has won each of his last three events and he beat Mr Alby when they clashed at Northam but that encounter two years ago, its tempo was slow even for a provincial race, it took place over 1,300m and, on Saturday, the geldings will meet at very different weights than in 2017.
