Never has Gatting (yellow and red colours) lost to any of his Swan River Vase rivals in a race beyond 1,600 metres

Punting Form race reports: Saturday 14 July

According to Punting Form, Gatting merits favouritism for the Swan River Vase over 2,200 metres at Belmont Park on Saturday but TABtouch's fixed odds market opened with the WATC Derby winner rated slightly below At The Ready.

Five of the seven Swan River Vase acceptors competed in the Strickland Stakes two weeks ago, a Group Three contest that was run at a pedestrian tempo in its early stages. The cream rose to the top - Material Man beat Pounamu for the fifth time in their seven clashes - but the overall form of the event is suspect because, for example, the winner registered a time 11.4 lengths slower than Punting Form's class benchmark. In a nutshell, the likes of At The Ready, Pushin' Shapes and Dark Alert may have been flattered by their promixity to Material Man, Pounamu and Gatting, the latter of which has run consistently sound races this preparation. Never has Gatting lost to any of his Swan River Vase rivals in a race beyond 1,600m and the new feature race's distance should be much to his liking.
