The Wednesday Wrap: Belmont - Wednesday 5 July

Race 1 - 12:12pm Get The Tabtouch Maiden (1300 Metres)

THE WINNER

Just Elated won nicely after being unlucky last start behind Mr Undercover, which went on to contest the Listed Belmont Guineas. The Gary Burger-trained six-year-old was ridden to perfection by Lisa Staples as she let the early speed go in front of her, many which found bother, and sprinted through along the inside to claim short-priced favourite Rogan Scent in the shadows of the post.

THE GOOD

Roman Skylab ran third and paid $5.30 for the place on the TABtouch tote. He seems to relish the soft conditions and rider Clint Johnston-Porter continues his sensational form.

THE BAD

Rogan Scent teased punters after leading all of the way as the short-priced favourite but was just nutted late. Her maiden tag won’t be around for long.

FASTEST LAST 600M

Just Elated – 37.44

Race 2 - 12:47pm Hahn Superdry Plate (1300 Metres)

THE WINNER

Trainer of winner Burning Pride Ken Adams told jockey William Pike to kick his filly out of the gates and settle in a forward position. Pike took up the running after starting well and was never headed. According to Adams, she will now have one more run and be set for a WA Oaks campaign next autumn.

THE GOOD

Uncle Con was one of our each-way specials on ‘Under the Radar’ and stormed home along the cutaway to finish second. He looks to be a nice horse for David Harrison moving forward and will get better with racing.

THE BAD

Favourite Ouqba Jack eased noticeably in betting and was trapped three-wide for the entire race. Lucky Escape raced ungenerously at the back of the field under Joseph Azzopardi and might just need more time to mature.

FASTEST LAST 600M

Uncle Con – 37.25

Race 3 - 1:22pm Salinger Handicap (1700 Metres)

THE WINNER

Dagorlad was found late in betting and was punted into $6.10 on the TABtouch tote before saluting the judge in first position. Troy Turner rode a patient race and settled the son of Blackfriars at the tail of the field before unleashing a dazzling sprint in the straight to get past rough chance Blazing Business. Vaughn Sigley’s good run of good form continues.

THE GOOD

Blazing Business was game to the line in second after sitting three-wide with cover. Lisa Staples managed to get the galloper trucking into the straight and he found the line gamely.

THE BAD

Hinchinbeel looked to lead comfortably but compounded in the straight. Don’t be surprised to see him back at the provincials soon.

FASTEST LAST 600M

Dagorlad – 38.67

Race 4 - 1:57pm Yellowglen Handicap (1700 Metres)

THE WINNER

Proclamation outstayed Cambo to score at $15.80 on the TABtouch tote. The key to him seemed to be drawing inside where he did not have to spend a penny in the run, considering he has drawn 10 and 12 at his two starts this preparation respectively. Ryan Hill got up along the inside of Cambo and pushed out the son of High Chaparral to claim his first win in Western Australia.

THE GOOD

Cambo was excellent again after enjoying the run of the race behind leader Hollywood Rock. He got out in time but was left in front a long way from home and was grabbed late by Proclamation. with two good runs under his belt this preparation, he should be winning very soon.

THE BAD

O’Reilly’s Crumpet sucked punters in once again and only battled away in the straight to run on into third. Apart from a slight check on rounding the bend, Clint Johnston-Porter got a lovely run in the race but just couldn’t reel in the first two past the post.

Race 5 - 2:35pm Thomas Sabo Handicap (2100 Metres)

THE WINNER

Queen Of Tease was given a strong ride by Matthieu Autier in the concluding stages of the challenging 2100m event. The daughter of Universal Ruler tracked into the race beautifully before being ridden hard to the line in testing conditions.

THE GOOD

Caralabek opened up at $15 with TABtouch on Tuesday 4 July, which was taken before the beginning of the race, and the son of Hala Bek was backed into $5.50. He ran on well into second but paddled late. He will be a winning chance again next start. Grand Cadeau finished fourth and may have needed the run under his belt. He stayed to the line well and will also be one to follow next start.

THE BAD

In a wide open betting race, with soft track conditions and a $47.40 shot winning, forgive the majority and treat warily as a form race.

FASTEST LAST 600M

Caralabek – 39.94

Race 6 - 3:15pm Perth Racing Young Membership Handicap (1200 Metres)

THE WINNER

Royal Command was simply the superior horse in testing conditions. Given another cushy ride by William Pike, the well-bred son of Street Sense put away an average class three field but should go on to greater feats.

THE GOOD

Lucky Legacy snuck along the inside to challenge in the straight but ran into a far better horse. The four-year-old mare looked to relish conditions so watch for her on soft tracks in the future.

THE BAD

Ellora May is a headscratcher for Justine Erkelens. Peter Knuckey went back to last from the wide draw but she failed to run on despite having won previously in the soft going.

FASTEST LAST 600M

Royal Command – 36.47

Race 7 - 3:55pm Perth Racing Corporate Membership Handicap (1400 Metres)

THE WINNER

Another rank outsider got the money in the Impressive Racing colours, this time Sunset Pete at $62.20 on the TABtouch tote. Given a cold ride along the inside my Matthieu Autier, the Frenchman guided the gelding along the inside of the cutaway, on straightening, before letting down with a wicked burst to win comfortably.

THE GOOD

Ryamar went back and settled near last, which is unlike her, but it paid dividends with the gelding getting up along the inside to run third. He doesn’t win out of turn but you have to admire his consistency. Sense Of Power stuck on well for second after leading but was no match for the winner.

THE BAD

Friarandice was scratched at the barriers six starts ago and was up to her old tricks again, throwing Peter Knuckey off when the starter released the field and running on riderless.

FASTEST LAST 600M

Sunset Pete – 36.64

Race 8 - 4:35pm Perth Racing Club Membership Handicap (1000 Metres)

THE WINNER

Santiago Gal finished the day off nicely for punters, saluting as $3.60 favourite, after bettors took a hammering with two blowouts earlier in the quaddie. Connections of Santiago Gal had to survive a protest from connections of the runner-up, Incredible Hulk, after the winner shifted out slightly in the straight. The protest was dismissed.

THE GOOD

Incredible Hulk was slightly unlucky in the straight again but his consistency must be admired. That is his sixth second in his last seven starts. He’ll pick up a win soon, just stay patient, punters! Last start winners La Bionda and Lady Latte both hit the line nicely for third and fifth respectively. They are progressive types which will win more races.

THE BAD

The Goblin Glider tailed off badly after rushing forward in the middle stages of the race.

FASTEST LAST 600M

Incredible Hulk – 35.90

PERFORMANCE OF THE DAY

Royal Command is a gelding that is worth following even though he only beat a moderate class three field. The son of Street Sense will furnish into a nice galloper and is one to watch moving into the summer months as a four-year-old. An honourable mention to Matthieu Autier and Darren McAuliffe after the jockey-trainer combination teamed up to win with Queen Of Tease and Sunset Pete at $47.40 and $62.20 respectively.

RIDE OF THE DAY

Lisa Staples gave Just Elated the perfect ride from barrier seven in the Get The TABtouch Maiden (1300m). Staples settled the gelding behind the leading group of eight runners, which were all cramped together in a tight bunch, and avoided traffic to sneak up along the inside and run down the favourite, Rogan Scent
