The Saturday Salute: Ascot - Saturday 6 May

Race 1 - 12:13PM THE ROTARY CLUB OF PERTH PLATE (1200 METRES)

THE WINNER

Art Series led all of the way under William Pike to make it two wins in a row. The beautiful daughter of Sebring will get better over further according to Pike, as the champion hoop broke a somewhat lean run of outs in town.

THE GOOD

Metallic Queen ran on well from just worse than midfield to get second for Mike Santich.

THE BAD

Favourite Vital Dancer was terribly unlucky in running after jumping well and then being caught wide. Troy Turner tried to snag back and slot in for cover but failed to do so and gave up a lot of ground. A run that Turner and trainer Brett Pope would rather forget.

Art Series – 34.99

Race 2 - 12:53PM FREO GROUP HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

THE WINNER

Reveille put her disappointing last start-loss behind her with thanks to a plum ride from William Pike. The blinkers went on the well-bred filly but she settled beautifully behind the speed and let down quickly in the straight.

THE GOOD

Elegant Blast ran on nicely for second and paid $6 for a place with TABtouch. She featured in Perth Racing’s “Under the Radar” leading into the day as one of the better each-way plays of the day.

THE BAD

Royal Missile’s third run this preparation was below par once again. Today was disappointing again but she just doesn’t seem to be letting down like she did last preparation.

Elegant Blast – 34.94

Race 3 - 1:33PM NEOMETALS HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

THE WINNER

Salorsci proved that he is a serious horse by beating some more than capable three-year-olds. Jarrad Noske gave the son of Discorsi a beautiful ride behind the speed and kicked away in the straight to hold off Dainty Tess. Trainer Jeff Noske thinks that the three-year-old will get over more ground as he matures.

THE GOOD

Dainty Tess was wide without cover and nearly pinched the race. She finished second, beaten only a head, and is as tough as old boots. She never runs a bad race. Kramden stuck on gamely for third after getting a fairly easy time of it out in front.

THE BAD

Trademark was fractious in the barriers before the jump and raced as though he had a bee in his bonnet. Forgive him but watch for how he parades before next start.

Dainty Tess – 33.97

Race 4 - 2:12PM RAMELIUS RESOURCES TROPHY (2200 METRES)

THE WINNER

Couleur Bizarre was given the run of the race behind the leader and, when pacemaker Ready To Fire rolled off the fence on straightening, the gap came and Shaun McGruddy drove the gelding through to claim his third successive win.

THE GOOD

War Ksar followed the eventual winner in the run but needed an out at about the 350m but couldn’t get fully clear until the 150m mark. He still ran a very honest race for second and arguably should have finished closer as the winner rolled about in the straight. Connections of War Ksar did protest but the margin of 1½ lengths was deemed to be too great and the protest was dismissed.

THE BAD

Preselection was wide for the entire race which put her out of play from a long way out. She hasn’t found any good form or luck this preparation.

Pushin’ Shapes – 36.14

Race 5 - 2:53PM THE ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY WA HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

THE WINNER

Aerozine got the run to suit and led all of the way after running even sectionals early, unlike last start when he went too first in the first half of the race.

THE GOOD

Despite being beaten as favourite, Remember Berlin attacked the line strongly with 59kg on his back. A step up in class to carry less weight will suit him.

THE BAD

Not too many surprises in the race according to betting markets and finishing positions. Just a shame for punters that favourite Remember Berlin was beaten.

Remember Berlin – 34.15

Race 6 - 3:35PM CREATING NEW DESTINIES HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

THE WINNER

Tonkatuff deserved the win after a couple of luckless efforts prior. The race setup nicely for the son of Therock and he just managed to get past favourite and leader Tycoon Target.

THE GOOD

Tycoon Target led and gave a mighty kick at the top of the straight. His fighting qualities will win him a few more races.

THE BAD

Our Mate Al was backed from $8 into $5.50 and had no luck when rounding the turn or in the straight. Watch for him next start.

Tonkatuff – 35.12

Race 7 - 4:10PM COMMIT TO CHANGE HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

THE WINNER

Push To Pass claimed a deserved victory for Lancelin trainer Ash Maley. This gelding has been knocking on the door for a while now and he may be destined for races over 2000m and beyond.

THE GOOD

10-year-old Verdello Blue ran another enormous race for second after finishing in the same position last start over 1800m as well. His record at Belmont is far superior compared to that of his Ascot form so 2000m and beyond at the winter track will suit.

THE BAD

Bergio didn’t get the run to suit unlike last start but there are certainly more race wins in him.

FASTEST LAST 600M

Barzinho – 35.21

Race 8 - 4:45PM PASSAGES RESOURCE CENTRE HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

THE WINNER

Red Paddy was given a plum ride by apprentice Aaron Mitchell. The usual backmarker slotted into a much handier position in running and was just behind the speed on settling down. Once a gap came in the straight, he showed his customary turn of speed and tenacity to run over the top of the leader.

THE GOOD

After coming off a strong win in the Fitzpatrick Plate, at Albany, My Greek Boy led before being grabbed late at the post by Just Act Natural and Red Paddy. He was only beaten by a neck margin. After a brilliant first up run, Profit Street looks set for a very good campaign. He ran another nice race second up.

THE BAD

State Solicitor came into the race with a lot of hype surrounding him. The bubble burst quickly when the $1.60 favourite failed to let down in the straight as punters expected. Watch the stewards’ report for anything further.

FASTEST LAST 600M

Profit Street – 34.12
