Under the Radar: Ascot - Saturday 6 May

Race 2 - 12:53PM FREO GROUP HANDICAP (1600 METRES) – FULL FIELD

5. ELEGANT BLAST

TABtouch opening price: $17

On paper, Elegant Blast looked as though she ran poorly last start after finishing a beaten favourite but she was only defeated under two lengths by some more seasoned older horses, which included the likes of Key To Fame.

Key To Fame won that 62+ event and has subsequently come out on won again in 72+ grade so the form looks to be sound.

There is not much speed expected in this race but she keeps the weight advantage against gallopers the same age as her and out to 1600m is a big plus.

At $17 in a pay one-two race, she is worth an each-way play.

Race 5 - 2:53PM THE ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY WA HANDICAP (1000 METRES) – FULL FIELD

8. CATAPLEXIC

TABtouch opening price: $11

Albeit in a maiden, Cataplexic first caught the eye when winning her maiden back in December 2016 up the straight at Pinjarra.

The daughter of Bearcat wound up from second last to fire home down the stand side rail to win impressively.

The lightly-raced five-year-old mare came to Ascot for her first start in town and acquitted herself nicely with a run-on fourth behind Snow Lord after missing the jump by a length.

The winkers go on for the first time and hopefully that means that she can jump with the rest of the field and settle a pair closer than usual.

With the genuine tempo expected in the race from Tenterden, Aerozine, Festive Excess and Chille Storm, she should be finishing off powerfully at the double figure each-way price.

Race 6 - 3:35PM CREATING NEW DESTINIES HANDICAP (1500 METRES) – FULL FIELD

2. THE COBBLA

TABtouch opening price: $9

The Cobbla ran a personal best two starts ago behind Ripper Rio over 1400m.

The key point out of that performance was that he settle on the speed and stuck on stoutly.

The four-year-old will be fit fourth up and the lack of pace in the race should allow him roll to the front from barrier 10 and be the one to catch.

Young apprentice Randy Tan has been riding in great form and can get them to kick strongly when out in front.

Despite finishing at the tail of the field last start when beaten 3½ lengths, don’t be surprised to see The Cobbla in the finish after running comfortable sectionals out near the front of the field.
