Under the Radar: Ascot - Wednesday 5 April

Race 4 - 3:15PM GOOD FRIDAY RACEDAY - 14 APRIL HANDICAP (1400 METRES) – FULL FIELD

5. GLITTERBELL

TABtouch opening price: $19

Glitterbell is the class-dropper of the race.

The daughter of Proart drops from benchmark 72+ grade to midweek class three company.

The Mike Santich-trained mare is a long way from her best form but she should get the cushy run along the fence and be able to finish off and show her best.

Randy Tan also takes off 2kg which should help the mare.

It’s now or never for the $248,000 earner.

Watch her effort from two starts ago when beaten under three lengths by Kensington Abbey (pink and black silks):

Race 5 - 3:55PM NATIONAL APPRENTICES' CHALLENGE (1600 METRES) – FULL FIELD

5. SAXSONIC JACK

TABtouch opening price: $17

In what is a tricky race, due to all runners being randomly designated with apprentice jockeys, we’ve found one at odds which will be piloted by a local apprentice who knows the tricky Ascot track better than many of her rival hoops.

Tayla Stone will ride Saxsonic Jack from after the six-year-old ran well second up behind Barzinho at Bunbury.

The horse to beat is Touch Of Silver but the young Tasmanian apprentice, who is riding him, could get caught out by the fact that she doesn’t know the ins and outs of the awkward Ascot circuit.

On a day where you will need cover in running, Stone should get a lovely run from barrier three and be able to finish off to run into the top three.

Watch his nice run-on effort along the inside last start at Bunbury (dark blue and white colours):

Race 7 - 5:05PM PERTH RACING CLUB MEMBERSHIP HANDICAP (2200 METRES) – FULL FIELD

12. OUTSPOKEN DUKE

TABtouch opening price: $17

Outspoken Duke isn’t the most genuine galloper going around but there are a few factors in his favour for a race such as this.

Firstly, he finally gets out to a suitable trip.

He is by Duke of Marmalade, which was a multiple Group One winner in Britain and Europe over distances ranging from 2000m to 2400m, and is out of a Galileo mare which suggests he wants as much ground as possible.

He gets 2200m without an issue.

Secondly, the multiple gear changes might just switch him on.

The bubble cheekers and lugging bit come off while the winkers go on to replace the blinkers.

Lastly, Troy Turner takes over riding duties.

Don’t underestimate the effect a change of rider has on a horse.

A horse can feel different rhythms and can switch on with the feel of a different jockey on their back.

His first up run this preparation suggested there was a win in store, watch that effort here (green, red and white silks with red cap):
